In 2003 I prepared myself physically and mentally for a new chapter and my second migration to Australia. I decided to fly to Pau in France, famous Tour de France town, and took a train to Hendaye on the Atlantic Coast, just inside France. I thought “If I can walk the GR 10 and HRP in the Pyrenees and can complete the two-month hike, I can also go to Oz!
I started in July and walked 2 months in one of the hottest summers on record. It was the best experience so far and I filled a few notebooks with stories and two sketchbooks on the journey. The sketching started careful and shy but I worked myself into a new found freedom in sketching and started to work very quick. The styles developed every day.
The route traversed the higher peaks and National Parks in France, Spain and in the Principality of Andorra, a tax refuge. I would walk for a week or so, descend into a town, bought fresh supplies, and return to the higher mountains. It was another incredible experience and I learnt a lot about myself.
